Last week Devorah Spigelman astounded us with the description of the news pertaining to Taylor Swift, who left her record label and is currently in the middle of rerecording her first six albums. Taylor is not alone, and it\u2019s worth spending a few minutes looking at the Israeli angle, a local star from Nazareth Illit \u2013 Aya Korem.<\/p>\n

Korem, a well-known Israeli singer who has won a golden album and the title \u2018artist of the year\u2019 for her debut album, has become famous not only because of her music. Similar to Taylor Swift, Korem also had a dispute with her record label and set out to wage a battle contesting the duration of the contract she had signed with them as a young singer – no less than 18 years.<\/p>\n

Korem\u2019s battle reached the Israeli Supreme Court and she emerged victorious \u2013 her contract was shortened. Korem did not rest and continued to fight, and in 2017 the Israeli Knesset enacted a law limiting the duration of agreements with artists in the music industry to seven years. This law is known as the Aya Korem law.<\/p>\n

The years have gone on and Korem continues to release music, among her music is a short album with songs from Leonard Cohen, and another album titles 2023 \u2013 the year her contract was set to end. This album was financed by crowdfunding.<\/p>\n

Recently, with her rise to TikTok and Twitter fame, Korem has publicized that she plans to release new version to her older songs. Unlike Taylor Swift, Korem will not be rereleasing her old albums, rather, she will be rerecording some of her songs with new musical arrangements. Among the tracks set to be rereleased is her 2006 hit Yonatan Shapira.<\/p>\n

Like Swift, Korem\u2019s actions present a show of force by an artist who wants to benefit from her own hard work. This is a classic example of someone who won\u2019t let others tell her what to do, as she says in one of her songs \u201cWe don\u2019t do it like that\u201d.<\/p>\n
